Out of all the relationships that man has in the earth, God told the man that he is to cleave to his wife. The word cleave means to stick to your wife like glue. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).
Many studies have shown that Christians divorce at the same rate as non-Christians. As Christian men and women, we must examine our relationship with our spouse often, to be sure that there is nothing separating us continually from one another. There is no activity that we’re involved in or no other relationship in our life so important that it should cause us to neglect our partner in the marriage.
When God formed the earth, He made all the animals first and then He made the man and woman last. The man is the only created being that God told to cleave to his wife. This is a commandment from God Himself. Our wife should be our best friend—not our momma! There is nothing wrong in having other godly friends, but we are commanded to be glued to our wife.
In Romans 12:2, Paul said, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” The perfect will of God is that we live very close to our wives. Walking out the Word of God in our lives is how God blesses our homes and strengthens our relationships.
Brothers and sisters, if we know persons who are not “married” in holy matrimony, according to God’s Word, but are “living together,” let’s be bold enough to tell them that God blesses only what He ordains in His Word. To receive God’s blessings, they must repent and get married. Men, let’s give an extra effort toward sticking to our spouse. Let’s show her affection, nourish and cherish her, provide all things comfortable for her, and not depart from her as long as we live. God loves obedience and obedience is what He blesses!
