Romans 3:23 NLT says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Everyone has sinned and we fall short of God’s glorious standard.” God has declared His righteousness in the Word of God and it is plain that He hates sin. Nothing less than the Blood of Christ would satisfy or make available our redemption.
When we sin, the sin is never against another person or persons. Sin is always an offense or wrongdoing against God. In Psalm 51:4, David said, “Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight…” When sin is viewed in its true character, it is always against the majesty of God. Because God is holy and just, He could not disregard or overlook our sin nature.
The justice of God demanded that mankind’s sin debt be paid. “…Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3). When Christ died at Calvary, all of the sins of the world were laid upon Him (Isaiah 53:6). God would only accept the Blood of Christ as payment in full, to satisfy that debt. So, Christ died for our sake. “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21).
Jesus Christ is the only One who could pay the penalty of our sin debt in full. 1 Cor. 6:20 says that we were bought with a price. Christ has paid our penalty. Our debt is paid in full.
